This is our first newsletter for the year 2020, and we are delighted that it is coinciding with International Women’s Day!

The Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to making the Constitution work for everyone through law and policy research, social and governance interventions and strategic impact litigation.

Tackling Caste Discrimination Through Law 

As part of its Discrimination and Intersectionality project, CLPR organized a lawyers’ learning session at Ernakulam, Kerala, in association with the Kerala High Court Advocates Association and three CSO workshops (Madurai, Hyderabad & Ernakulam). The focus of these workshops was on a better understanding of the caste discrimination laws in India which are mainly the The SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, the Protection of Civil Rights Act 1955 and the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013. We had eminent resource persons including Martin Macwan and Bezwada Wilson speaking on the challenges in implementation of the law. Please find their videos here

SC Observer Workshop 

As a part of its Supreme Court in the Classroom series, the SC Observer team conducted a workshop in order to introduce to students how Supreme Court interprets the Constitution and how to anlayze and report on court cases. Sabrimala case. Read More

Exploring Citizenship Workshop & Film Screening

The CAD team at CLPR organized a workshop titled “Exploring Citizenship” for students at NALSAR University, Hyderabad to showcase the role of the constitution in shaping the concept of citizenship amidst CAA protests. Read More. On the weekend of Republic Day 2020, SC Observer team attended The Courts and the Constitution – 2019 in Review, hosted by NALSAR University of Law. The conference reviewed key cases and legal controversies from the last calendar year. In doing so, it sought to broadly analyse the ‘past, present and future’ of Indian constitutionalism. Here, Dr. Sudhir Krishnaswamy moderated a session on “Developments in Equality Jurisprudence”. Read More. CLPR has set up the National Constitution Society (NCS) which is a network of student constitution societies in universities across India that aim to create, celebrate and practise India’s constitutional values. The NCS chapter at St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore hosted a film screening and discussion on “Stop the Boats” – a story of asylum seekers and their detention. It was an extremely engaging discussion which was led by Abhayraj Naik.  Read More

Jayna Kothari’s opinion piece titled,”Benched By the Bar” has been published by The Indian Express. In this piece, she argues that bar associations in Karnataka instructing members not to represent accussed in sedition cases violates consititutional morality. Read more
