The Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to making the Constitution work for everyone through law and policy research, social and governance interventions, and strategic impact litigation.

Social Justice Cafe: Conversations on Equality, Gender Identity, and Anti-Discrimination at Church Street

 

As part of the Church Street Clean Air initiative, CLPR set up a ‘Social Justice Café,’ with equal rights on the menu on February 21st, 2021. We conducted fun games and activities to raise awareness on transgender rights, equality, and prohibition of discrimination based on race, caste, sex, and religion; and also had a group discussion led by Jayna Kothari, Arvind Narayan, and Sanjay Kabir Bavikatte which received a great response from the public. Workshops on Implementation of Caste Discrimination Legislations  

On 23rd Jan 2021, CLPR in collaboration with CMASK(Committee for Monitoring and Strengthening SCs/STs in Karnataka) organized a workshop titled “Making the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities ) Act 1989 Work”. The focus of the workshop was on a better understanding of The SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 and the Rules and challenges of implementation of the law and to ensure that activists who work on the ground are able to implement the law with the authorities. Read more
On 27th Feb 2021, CLPR in collaboration with Thamate organised a workshop on the implementation of the ” Prohibition of Employment Of Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013 and the Rules”. The main objective behind this workshop was to build the legal capacity for civil society organizations and activists working on tackling manual scavenging to ensure that the law works, that persons engaged in scavenging are able to get ID cards and rehabilitation benefits and also get criminal cases registered for the violation of the law.  Read More 

Litigation on Cow Slaughter Ordinance

 

CLPR is representing two petitioners in a Public Interest Litigation challenging the constitutional validity of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Ordinance, 2020 and now the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act 2020. In this matter, the Karnataka High Court has passed an order recording an undertaking that the Karnataka government will not take any coercive action for transporting cattle under the law. Read PIL here 

An Afternoon with the Constitution of India 

 

The ConstitutionofIndia.net celebrated Republic Day by setting up a ‘Do You Know Your Constitution’ booth at Church Street, Bangalore. The booth facilitated the general public to engage with India’s Constitution through fun games and quizzes. Read more

 

Key additions to the ContitutionofIndia.net website included a Desk Brief that looked at why the framers of the Constitution detested sedition law and a brief biography of Constituent Assembly member Leela Roy who made significant contributions to India’s freedom movement and women’s empowerment.

Publication and News 

 

Jayna Kothari’s opinion piece titled, “Speaking up, For Public Good” has been published by The Indian Express. In this piece, she argues that the recent Priya Ramani judgment has expanded the law on sexual harassment and provided the opportunity to widen the defences against defamation law. Read More
