The Oxford University Press in collaboration with the Centre for Law and Policy Research is holding a book release cum book discussion at the Bangalore International Centre on ‘The Future of Disability Law’ by Jayna Kothari, published earlier this year. This book is a critical and comprehensive analysis of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995. It examines the Act from a historical perspective, giving an overview of the various legal approaches towards addressing disability-related discrimination. The author critically examines the various provisions of the Act— the definition of disability, affirmative action, equal opportunities in education, reservation in employment, and implementation. The volume also offers an international perspective on disability law by comparatively analysing Indian disability law with international jurisprudence. Taking into account the judgments of the Supreme Court and various high courts, it presents a forward thinking interpretation of the Act in light of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which India has ratified.
The book release will be followed by a panel discussion on various issues on disability with the author, Dr. Meenu Bhambani and Mr. Arrvind Narrain as panelists.
Dr. Meenu Bhambani heads the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Corporate Social Responsibility at MphasiS, Bangalore. She has worked on disability and development at the World Bank, held a high-level government position as Dy. Commissioner for Disability, and served as a Program Officer for the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Persons with Disabilities (NCPEDP) in India. Dr. Bhambhani received her M.S. in Disability and Human Development from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Ph.D in English Literature from the University of Rajasthan.
Mr. Arvind Narrain is a human rights activist and lawyer with the Alternative Law Forum, Bangalore of which he is a founder member. He is the author of “Queer: Despised Sexuality, Law and Social Change” (2004) and co-editor of” Because I have a Voice: Queer Politics in India” (2005).
