This book is part of our “Equality Now!” series of four resource books, one on each of CLPR’s key areas of rights-based work including disability rights, transgender persons’ rights, women’s rights and anti-caste discrimination.
This Book provides the legal framework on caste discrimination in India and captures the most significant Supreme Court and High Court judgments which have shaped the rights of marginailsed caste communities in India in plain and simple language. These cases address both the realization and denial of Dalit and Adivasi rights, offering a holistic understanding of how courts have interpreted and implemented gender justice.
This resource book aims to empower Dalits and Adivasis, activists, policymakers, and other stakeholders with an accessible and practical guide to the legal landscape on caste discrimination in India. It is organized into thematic sections that address various issues, including equality in the workplace and educational institutions, prevention of untouchability and caste-based atrocities, prohibition of manual scavenging, at the intersection of caste and gender, as well as land rights and welfare measures. This book is enriched through CLPR’s National Consultation with stakeholders, including leading anti-caste activists, academics, and lawyers, who contributed critical insights and feedback on the draft.
The book includes QR codes under each case summary which link to accessible and screen-reader friendly versions of the original judgments, and further includes highlights of significant paragraphs.
