Round Table Discussion on the RTE Judgment

National Law School of India University’s research centre, Centre for Child and the Law  in collaboration with the Law and Society Committee invited Centre for Law and Policy Research for a round table discussion on the implications of the judgment pronounced by the Supreme Court in the Right to Education matter (Society for Uniaded Private Schools of Rajasthan v. Union of India) on 12.04.2012 where the majority bench comprising of Chief Justice Kapadia and Justice Swatanter Kumar upheld the constitutionality of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.

Jayna Kothari, Varsha Iyengar, and Shruthi Ramakrishnan from CLPR attended the discussion where Ms. Jayna Kothari was able to share her experience having represented Azim Premji Foundation in the case. She highlighted the important arguments made and the chief issues that were raised before the full judge bench of the Supreme Court.

The various issues involved were discussed especially regarding the impact of the judgment excluding the minority educational institutions from the purview of the Act. The group also debated on the exclusion of Government Schools to adhere to the norms and standards prescribed in the Act.
