Training for CD Fellows: Disability Rights Litigation & Human Rights Lawyering Strategies
The Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR) conducted a Training Programme for the Constitution Defender Fellows on April 11 and April 12, 2025. The primary aim of the Training Programme was to enhance the capacities of legal practitioners, fostering a deeper understanding of Disability Rights Litigation and the strategies employed in Human Rights Lawyering. This initiative is part of the Constitution Defenders Project. The cohort of Fellows consists of advocates practising across various judicial forums throughout the country, who are engaged in rights-based litigation with the support and guidance of CLPR.
Professor (Dr.) Sanjay Jain, a distinguished faculty member at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru, engaged with the fellows to conduct an in-depth exploration of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Arvind Narrain, a Visiting Faculty member at NLSIU, presented insights on Human Rights Lawyering, Fact-Finding, and various strategic approaches. Additionally, Jayna Kothari, Senior Advocate, the High Court of Karnataka, provided a discussion on Disability Rights Litigation.
During the 1.5-day training program, the fellows engaged in a screening of the Marathi film “Court,” which was subsequently followed by a discussion addressing its central themes.
