The Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR) is a not-for-profit trust dedicated to making the Constitution work for everyone through law and policy research, social and governance interventions, and strategic impact litigation. Our primary focus is on addressing discrimination at the intersections of caste, gender, disability, and other minority groups through legal means.
A. About the Position and Role
The Research Associate will report to the Senior Research Associates and may be assigned duties by other authorized personnel. This role involves delivering expert research, data collection and analysis of the Indian legal and judicial institutions and the challenges and experiences of women within these institutions. The Research Associate shall also proactively support other colleagues in the organisation to do the same. We welcome applications from economists, social researchers, statisticians and lawyers with expertise in statistical analysis.
This is a full-time role, based out of Bangalore, India for a period of six (6) months beginning October 2024, with the possibility of extension.
B. Scope of Work
- Working with CLPR’s research team and Executive Director to ensure that CLPR’s work is effectively underpinned by robust research evidence.
- In collaboration with other colleagues, design and deliver high impact research, analysis and evaluation, to time and quality expectations, within budget.
- Develop and utilise appropriate research and analytical methods, evaluation strategies, and research tools.
- Develop and manage systems for gathering, recording, analysing and presenting data necessary to the project for maximum impact.
- Contribute to research and policy reports, publications, as well as internal documents. This includes working with others to develop conclusions and recommendations.
- Support the development and training of CLPR colleagues to effectively utilise appropriate research methods and tools in the delivery of high-quality project work.
- Represent CLPR at external meetings and occasionally undertake public speaking/ presentations with support as necessary.
- Undertake project administration and coordination tasks related to research activity, including data entry, recruitment and note taking.
- Supervise interns, associates and temporary staff in relation to research activity, including possible line management responsibility for research interns.
- Demonstrate a commitment to equality and access to justice for marginalised groups including but not limited to women and children, persons with disabilities, LGBTQI+ persons and oppressed classes, castes and tribes.
- Travel and occasional overnight stays will be required.
C. Required Skills
- Ability to work independently, translating research requirements into action plans, and following projects through from initiation to completion.
- Strong interpersonal skills for networking and conducting primary research across various entities.
- Excellent economic/statistical/quantitative and qualitative research skills.
- Exceptional analytical, writing, and organizational abilities.
- Capacity to handle multiple projects concurrently, even under tight deadlines.
- Demonstrable evidence of strong written and oral communication skills.
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals are viewed positively.
- Strong passion for mission-based research and advocacy, and a commitment to social justice work.
D. Education, Experience, and Training:
- Master’s Degree in Economics, Sociology, Mathematics, Law or other Social Science subject or equivalent qualifications and experience in research, economics or statistics.
- Minimum 5 (five) years’ experience working in research and policy, development, economics, statistics or another similar field.
- Should have experience using a range of research and evaluation methodologies and should have experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
- Experience in the legal field is preferred.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
